Memorizing Scripture | Memory Building System

October 12, 2016 by Krista Leave a Comment

Hiding God's Word in My Heart - How I memorized an entire index box full of Bible verses in just 10 minutes a day!

When is the last time you have faced a tough situation and didn’t know what to do?  Or when a lot of responsibility rested on you but you felt like you didn’t have any answers!

As wives and mothers, we have SO much responsibility given to us by God and sometimes it can be overwhelming!

Whether giving advice to our husbands or training our children in the way they should go, being in tune with the Holy Spirit is vital.  That is where memorizing God’s Word comes in.

Why do it?

I’ve already touched on some of the importance but let’s look at what the Bible has to say about it.

Matthew 5:45 says, “God will send rain on the righteous and the unrighteous”.  Just because I am a Christian does not mean my life is book-1209805_640going to be easy.

The purpose of my life is very clear and the motivation for everything I do is Christ.  But I will still face temptations, distractions and hard times.

But we see in Psalm 119:11, “Your Word I have hidden in my heart that I might not sin against You”.  And that is our answer!  The strongest times in my Christian walk have been those times that I was not only studying God’s Word but storing it in my heart.

Let us also take an example from Jesus.  When Satan presented Him with some very tough questions in Matthew 4, His response was memorized Scripture.

And the last thing I would like to mention is witnessing opportunities.  When God gives you the chance to share your faith with someone, what a shame it would be if you had nothing to share.  God promises that His Word will not return void but for it to make an impact, we must first be able to share it…even if we don’t have our Bible on hand.

My method

The method I have used my entire life is very simple.  But it will ensure that you not only review every verse at least once a month but continuously add new verses as well.

These are the supplies you will need:

  • Index card box
  • Index cards
This is a box that I made years ago and still serves me well today!
This is a box that I made years ago and still serves me well today!
  • 11 index card dividers
  • Verses!

On the index card dividers you will write:

  1. New Verse
  2. Everyday
  3. Sunday
  4. Monday
  5. Tuesday
  6. Wednesday
  7. Thursday
  8. Friday
  9. Saturday
  10. Monthly
  11. Unlearned

Now open up your box, put the blank cards in the back and the dividers in the front (in the order above).

The next step is to write down some verses!  The method that you use to find them is up to you.  I often will write down a verse that speaks to me during a devotional time and put it in the box.

Your first verse will start under the “New Verse” tab and will stay there one week.  Review it every day.

The second week you will move that verse behind the “Everyday” tab and a second verse will be put behind “New Verse”.  Review both every day.

The third week, move your first verse under “Sunday”, second verse under “Everyday” and a third verse under “New Verse”.  Review the “Everyday” and “New Verse” every day and the “Sunday” only on that Sunday.

Week four you will keep your first verse under “Sunday”, move your second verse under “Monday”, third verse under “Everyday” and your fourth verse under “New Verse”.

Continue this process until every weekday tab has five verses under it.  At that point you will move your seven oldest verses under “Monthly” so that you never have more then five verses under each day.

So once all of your tabs have verses under them, everyday you will review the “New Verse”, “Everyday” and whichever day of the week it is.  Then pick a day each month to review your “Monthly” verses.

Make sense?

With this method I have been able to have a index card box FULL of verses and been able to say any one of them without any prompts!  And that with only five minutes of review every day!

The best part!
A child is never too young to be surrounded by the Bible and start storing it in their hearts!
A child is never too young to be surrounded by God’s Word and start storing it in their hearts!

Truly, any verse memorization is easier to do with a partner.  Someone that can hold you accountable and can look at the card to double check you while you are quoting the verse.

The way I actually started memorizing
verses as a child was in simply helping my mom review her verses using this method.  And now that I have children of my own, another benefit to storing God’s Word in my heart is being an example and a memory partner for them!20161012_18465954

Another way that my parents taught me the importance of memorizing God’s Word was through an analogy.  This particular analogy stuck in my head and I have used it in many middle school classes I have taught in the past.

THE analogy

For the sake of this story, let’s say that Blue Elephants are bad thoughts such as lust, depression or anger.  Pink Giraffes are good thoughts such as contentment, joy or forgiveness!

You have been thinking of Blue Elephants all day!  You know you should stop and you truly want to.  So you say to yourself, “I must stop thinking of Blue Elephants…I MUST stop thinking of Blue Elephants!”blue-163493_640

What are you thinking about?  BLUE ELEPHANTS!

So what is the solution?  Think about Pink Giraffes!

You see, even when we know that our thoughts are wrong and our intentions to change them are sincere; if we don’t have anything to replace them with, we are stuck.

So the next time you feel fear, memorize Psalm 46:1, “God is my refuge and my strength, a very present help in trouble.”  And replace that Blue Elephant with a Pink Giraffe!

If you have never memorized God’s Word or just haven’t for a while, I encourage you to pick it back up and let me know how it goes!
