Since our family of four lives on one modest income, I have many opportunities to learn money-saving lessons by necessity!
There are so many aspects about being a spouse/homeowner/car owner/parent and in general an adult that I am still learning as I go. One of them is insurance (medical/home/car/life etc).
What does all of the lingo mean?
How do you know what company to go with?
How much coverage do we need?
Well, I stumbled across some interesting information recently that might be obvious to some of you but just in case you are at my knowledge level, I thought I would share this new way I’ve found to SAVE MONEY!
I have mentioned in previous posts that in an effort to pay off some debt and save during this season of our lives, we decided to sell my car and live with one vehicle. It was the perfect time to do it because we had just one child who was just a few months old and I rarely had to go anywhere during the day.
Of course it’s always fun to get out of the house sometimes but we were willing to make that sacrifice in order to get where we wanted to be financially.
But now Heidi is old enough to start getting involved in some “out of the house” activities and since having Daniel we have double the doctor appointments. So we decided it was time to become a two-car family again.
We started strategizing where to cut in the budget so that we could start saving to pay for another vehicle (our desire was to do it in cash) but then the Lord provided another way through my very generous parents.
Before passing away, my grandmother had given her CRV to my parents and they have been blessed by it for the past few years. But they have five grandkids and wanted to have a vehicle that could fit that many car seats…so they decided to buy a bigger car and bless us with the vehicle they had been blessed with!!
That whole situation/provision was such a great reminder to me that if you feel led to live on one income but can’t always see how it will work out…GOD WILL PROVIDE!
My previous car had been insured by the same agent as my parents since I hadn’t met my husband at the time I bought the car. But, of course, I was going to insure the CRV under the same agent as Josh, not even realizing that there was a benefit to be had from doing that.
Come to find out, adding an extra vehicle to his insurance plan gives us a THIRTY DOLLAR discount every MONTH!!
So I took it a step further and asked what would happen if we insured our house on the same plan (we were currently with a different company) and they said that would give us the biggest discount in the book!!
This all seems so simple but we went from thinking we were going to have an additional car payment AND another large insurance bill to realizing we were being given a car and saving a good bit on our house and car insurance!!
God is good! He WILL provide! He is just waiting for us to ask!
