If you have been following my blog recently you have probably noticed that there have been a lot of posts on cleaning routines/products etc. Well this post is the climax of them ALL!
I feel like I did SOOOOO much in my single years to prepare for being a wife/homemaker/mommy. But I don’t think you can truly be prepared until you are no longer reading about other’s experiences and living out your own.
Part of my pursuit to be the homemaker that God wants me to be is to ALWAYS learn/study/be teachable.
The question isn’t…
“What worked best for my mom?”
“What did that book I studied say to do?”
“How is it normally done?”
…what we really need to do is take all that knowledge and find out what works best for our particular family in the specific season of life that we are in.
The first subject I decided to tackle in my major of homemaking was CLEANING! As I’ve researched, experimented, and learned from my mistakes I’ve passed on some of what I’ve learned in my posts.
Well I have reached a place, in this season of life, that I feel confident and in control of my cleaning habits, organization, and tools/products. But as I move on from this subject of study I would like to pass on one more nugget that has aided in this knowledge base more then I can say!
As I mentioned above, I don’t believe you should ever just take what a book says (besides the Bible) and assume it will work for you without doing other research and trying it for yourself. But I have to say that this book has given me countless new ideas and every time I’ve put into practice what it taught I have been thrilled with the results!
THE book is Clean My Space by Melissa Maker and it has TRANSFORMED my cleaning organization, thoroughness, and confidence!
Melissa started a cleaning business a number of years back and decided that she was going to be the best she could possibly be! Her goal was to find the best methods, products, tools, and routines possible.
Because of her diligence, her business grew and she is now a nationally know name in the cleaning field!
And in this book she is SHARING HER SECRETS! 🙂
Obviously, I can’t tell you everything in the book, but I do want to just mention a couple of the top lessons I have learned that have truly been game-changers for me.
- I have written about my “zone” routine (click here for more info) but in Clean My Space it lays out the most efficient order clean a room so that you are done quickly and leave the room as clean as possible. Let’s just say I have COMPLETELY re-done my zone lists and find that they are MUCH more manageable and I am entirely confident that every corner is clean when I leave.
- There have always been those tasks that don’t need to be done often enough to be put on the weekly cleaning schedule or the zone list but still need to get done. Melissa says that if there are tasks (and she helps you find them) that aren’t getting done you need to “make an appointment” to do them. So I now have “six month tasks” and “yearly tasks” reminders on my calendar that cover things like cleaning the curtains, deep cleaning the carpet, washing the chandelier, etc.
- I had dabbled in making my own DIY cleaner set before (and wrote several posts about it) but reading this book and realizing that Melissa is a HUGE fan of DIY cleaners allowed me to fill in any gaps for the specialty cleaning (wood polish/electronic cleaner/etc).
I could go on all day, but you get the point…this book is AMAZING!
Well, there you have it! I am moving on from my study of cleaning for now and tackling the next big topic…
HEALTHY, TRADITIONAL, GOD-GLORIFYING EATING!
Stay tuned for more details on that!
