We’ve all heard the Albert Einstein quote, “the day you stop learning, you start dying.”
It used to annoy me so much when my mother would reinforce it by telling me that every trial is an opportunity to learn. When I wanted to know the definition of a word, instead of telling me she would say “go look it up in the dictionary so you can learn to find your own information.”
Well, I’m turning into my mother…and I’m proud of it! I have always thought well of my mother and had a great deal of respect for her, but the things she taught me over the years never made more sense then when I became a wife and mom myself.
I am a believer that the moment you are content with your knowledge base and choose to stop striving to learn, you may not die but your life will become very boring and stagnant.
My motivation for blogging
I’m sure all other moms out there can relate when I say that a large portion of my time since having my first child has be spent researching.
How do I teach her to sleep?
What solids should I feed her?
How do I get blowout stains out of a onesie?
Should I call 911 when a rash breaks out on her neck?
But even before Heidi came I was a new bride and in charge of a keeping a home for the first time…soooo much to learn!
This was actually a large reason that I started this blog and named it what I did. I knew that if I was committed to a blog focused on becoming an expert homemaker, I would not allow myself to ever be content with the status quo.
It is often tempting to compare yourself to other mothers/wives/women that are more lackadaisical in their approach and say, “I’m doing okay.” But if we start comparing ourselves to Christ’s examples of women in Proverbs 31 or Titus 2, I’m fairly certain we all fall short…BIG TIME!
But if we picture it as a race or a journey, it becomes exciting! Every day, every new lesson and every mistake that we learn from is bringing us closer to the finish line of success!
Benefit your home
Learning not only makes life exciting but it can transform your home!
It has been research that has allowed me to stay home because I was able to find creative ways to live on a lot less money. Ways to cut the budget, to save and to have fun for less.
One of my biggest jobs as keeper of this home is to feed my family the healthiest diet I can (but of course, still make it appetizing) and not spend much money. That took a lot of learning on my part!
I also thought I was already knowledgeable on how to keep a clean home. But now I am pretty much the sole person in charge of that task, and have a nine month old investigating (aka, tying to eat) EVERYTHING! Needless to say, I have had to research many new and natural methods.
As I walk through our home and look at the different rooms and think of the different seasons my marriage and my children will go through…I will never run out of things that I need to learn!
Inspire your children
Another phrase most of us have probably heard is “more is caught then taught.” If I am homeschooling my children at home and telling them about the importance of learning but never actually furthering myself on any subject, it will be for naught.
As other homeschooling moms out there have probably already realized, I’m fully confident that just teaching my children will require me to relearn MANY concepts! But it is more then the basic subjects.
If my child has a curiosity but is never motivated to pursue it, it will probably remain a curiosity.
But if they see me never being content wondering something, needing to learn more everyday, it will be only natural for them to do the same! Who knows if their future passion/job/life goals will come from a simple decision to learn!
1 Corinthians 9:24 says, “Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win.”
This is not a comparison game. It’s not about whether the other mothers you know are doing more or less then you. Because we will not be judged based on the actions of others.
We will win this race if we live every moment striving to be the wife, mother and woman that God is calling us to be!
I would love to hear from you! What are some ways you have been able to further your home through learning?
